Causes and Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction 

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common problem these days, and men are constantly searching for a solution. Many factors can cause ED; some of the most common include cardiovascular diseases (chronic high blood pressure for instance), hormonal disorder, diabetes, prostatectomy surgery trauma, cancer and even the side effects of certain drugs. For instance, obesity, cigarette smoking, regular eating of foods rich in cholesterol or overuse of alcohol make a man venerable to the disease. 


Some other causes of ED include:

  • Surgery-related trauma

  • Restricted blood flow due to impaired endothelial function
  • Neurogenic disorders like Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease or multiple sclerosis
  • Arterial disorders such as pulmonary hypertension and peripheral vascular disease
  • Cavernosal disorders, such as Peyronie's disease
  • Mental disorders, such as severe depression, substance abuse and anxiety disorder
  • Iatrogenic reasons: such as intake of antihypertensive medication and drugs administered to treat the central nervous system.

Although rare, erectile dysfunction can also be triggered by relational or psychological problems. In this case, the Ed is temporary and gone once the problem is solved or with the help of placebo effect.
